PNG, PDF, SVG file types. What are the differences and how can I use them?
For printing, signage, and professional printing, you need SVG or PDF — they are vector-based and do not lose quality at any size; they are included in the Standard and Business plans. For websites, social media, and presentations, PNG is suitable. On a transparent background, all three formats are available in the Standard and Business plans; in the Lite plan, only 1000×1000 PNG on a white or colored background is available.
PNG
PNG files can be used for almost any digital purpose. They are also useful if you need digital images with transparency, such as logos to be placed on colored backgrounds or over other images. Note: this file type is not recommended for printing. PNG is a higher-quality version of JPG that can support a transparent background. Where to use:
- Websites and blogs
- Presentations
- Documents in Word or Google Docs
- Social media profiles and cover photos
- Online stores or platforms
- Adding as a watermark
How to open PNG files? You can open PNG files on computers, mobile devices, and tablets, as it is an accessible and easy-to-read file format. Most browsers also allow you to view PNG files without downloading the file.
The 10001000 pixel PNG format is included in the Lite plan, and the 20002000 pixel PNG format is included in the Standard or Business plan. Note: If you have purchased the Business package, you will receive PNG files in the required size for avatars and social media covers, as well as versions for wallpapers and watermarks. These files are designed using the Turbologo logo maker.
PDF files are commonly used for creating documents, but they can also be used for sharing images, including logos and brand identity guidelines.
What are the advantages of PDF files?
- High quality
- Easy-to-read format
- Formatting remains unchanged on all devices
- Support for transparent backgrounds
- Convenient for sharing You can use PDF files to print your logo on printed materials (business cards, posters, stickers, etc.).
How to open PDF files? Since it is an easy-to-read file format, you can download and open a PDF file on computers, mobile devices, and tablets. Most browsers allow you to preview a PDF file without opening it in an additional program after downloading. The ideal program for opening a PDF file is Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded for free and comes with most computers.
To edit a PDF logo file, you will need Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop.
The PDF format is included in the Standard or Business plan. This format is not included in the Lite plan. For business cards and other materials in the Business plan, there is a separate “PDF for printing”.
SVG
Vector SVG files will always be crisp and high-quality, making them ideal for printing. These file formats are also great for sending to a designer.
What are the advantages of SVG files?
- Can be scaled to any size without losing image quality
- Vector file format
- Small file size compared to PNG or JPG
- Web-friendly XML language and ability to edit in design software such as Adobe Illustrator
- Supports transparent backgrounds
How to open SVG files? You can open SVG files in a browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Internet Explorer), in Adobe Illustrator, or in another Adobe program such as Photoshop and InDesign with an SVG plugin.
The SVG format is included in the Standard or Business plan. This format is not included in the Lite plan.
Common issues
PDF opens blank. Open the file in a browser or in Adobe Acrobat Reader — some viewers do not display transparent backgrounds and vector elements. If the file is still blank, write to support and send a link to the logo.
The print shop asks for “outlines”. Send an SVG or PDF — these are vector formats. If you need to convert fonts to outlines, this is done in Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or similar software.
Need a vector of an image from an AI generator. The AI generator only makes PNGs. For printing, use 4K quality or assemble the logo in the builder and download the SVG or PDF.
